ITINERARY

 
Treasures of Austria, Italy & Switzerland
Day 1 - Arrive Zurich
You are met at Zurich airport and transferred to your hotel. After check-in, later this afternoon, we enjoy an orientation tour of Switzerland's financial capital with our Tour Director which includes the grand Cathedral and Bahnhofstrasse with its many elegant stores. This evening, we meet for a welcome drink with our Tour Director.

Day 2 - Zurich – Liechtenstein – Innsbruck (3 nights)
Today's drive brings us to the Principality of Liechtenstein, dominated by its 700 year old Castle. Time to shop for collectors' postage stamps or souvenirs before we make our way to the Austrian border. Spectacular scenery awaits as we drive through the Arlberg region to mountain-ringed Innsbruck for our three-night stay. On arrival an orientation tour shows us the Golden Roof and Hofburg Palace as well as the Wilten Basilica dominated by the Olympic ski jump. This evening after dinner at the hotel, why not celebrate and join a folklore evening of thigh-slapping and yodelling?

Day 3 - Munich Excursion
Enjoy a scenic drive into German Bavaria where we stop in the picturesque village of Oberammergau – famous for its Passion Play and for its picture painted houses. Then it's a short drive to Munich, where our Tour Director shows us the Marienplatz with its famous Glockenspiel – part of the city's 'Rathaus' and of course the celebrated Hofbräuhaus. Time to shop or to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the open-air food market, before returning to Innsbruck. Dinner is at our hotel tonight. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

 

Day 4 - Salzburg Excursion
An early start this morning as we head to the musical city of Salzburg. We take the scenic route via St. Johann, past the Wilder Kaiser Mountains and drive through a small section of Germany to the province of Salzburg and its sugar icing capital. Memories of "The Sound of Music" will haunt us on our sightseeing tour on foot. First through the gardens of the Mirabell Palace and along the pretty Getreidegasse to Mozart's birthplace before ending on Mozart Square. Then there's time at leisure to perhaps take the funicular to the Castle Fortress or feast on delicious 'schnitzel and noodles'! An evening return to Innsbruck for a dinner of Tyrolean cuisine in a local restaurant. (Buffet Breakfast / Highlight Dinner)

 

Day 5 - Innsbruck – Verona (3 nights)
Along the Brenner Pass into Italy and the charming landscape of the Dolomite Mountains. Next we descend to the Veneto plain reaching Lake Garda. We drive along its beautiful shores stopping in Sirmione with its ancient castle. Then on through the Bardolino vineyards to Verona – romantic city of star-crossed lovers! (Buffet Breakfast)

Day 6 - Venice Excursion
Today is filled with excitement as we drive to the Adriatic Coast and the floating city of Venice. We cruise along the Giudecca Canal by private launch, seeing the Palladian Church of Christ the Redeemer, the island of St. George, the Cathedral of St. Mary of our Health and of course the Doges' Palace and the Byzantine Basilica of St. Mark's. We stop by the Bridge of Sighs on the way to St. Mark's Square and to one of the oldest glass-blowing workshops, where we witness a demonstration of this ancient craft. Then free time to perhaps take an excursion into the Lagoon to the island of Burano, for a fresh seafood lunch! We return to Verona with dinner at our hotel. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

 

Day 7 - Verona sightseeing & at leisure
This morning we discover one of Europe's secret jewels on our walking tour of the city. We will visit the 2,000 year old Arena, built by the Romans and still in use today for Opera performances and popular concerts. We will also see Piazza Bra, Piazza delle Erbe and the tomb of the renowned Scaliger family and of course, we see Juliet's balcony! Verona is one of the most exciting cities in Europe for shopping, so shop till you drop in the Via Mazzini with its boutiques and wine-bars. We dine at our hotel this evening. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

 

Day 8 - Verona – Milan – Lucerne (2 nights)
This morning we drive past Brescia and Bergamo to Milan, where we stop to see the gothic Duomo, "La Scala" Opera house and the 19th century Galleria. After, free time for lunch, before driving into the Alps and past Lake Como, entering into Switzerland and the Ticino district. We cross Lake Lugano and drive through the Gotthard Range to lakeside Lucerne for two nights. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner)

Day 9 - Lucerne orientation & at leisure
Our orientation tour of this medieval city shows us the Lion Monument, the Jesuit Church and the Chapel Bridge. Then you are free to shop for Swiss timepieces and chocolates or maybe take a cable-car up a nearby mountain peak!

Day 10 - Lucerne – Depart Zurich
After breakfast this morning it's time to bid farewell to new-found friends as we transfer you to Zurich Airport for your return flight to America. (Buffet Breakfast)

Airport Transfers
  • London Gateways: Transfers can be expensive, particularly between the Airport and central London. When you book your tour with Trafalgar your transfers to and from the airport are included. It's that simple. Trafalgar has included a Free transfer to and from your airport and Central London.
  • Important – Please Note: Passengers will only be entitled to transfers to and from London Airports providing the following conditions are met:
  • You are staying at a London hotel, booked by Trafalgar, on the night of your arrival and the night prior to the date of your departure.
  • Flights are either booked by Trafalgar or detailed information on flights is provided by your Travel Agent not less than 21 days prior to departure.
  • Only one included transfer both inbound and outbound per tour is included by Trafalgar. Transfers are by express train to a Central London Rail Station.
  • Heathrow Express operates between 05.10-23.30. Gatwick Express operates inbound services between 05.20-23.45 and outbound services from 04.30-23.45. Transfers outside of these times are at the passengers own expense.
  • In the event of unforeseen events (road or rail works, demonstrations, strikes) Trafalgar will not be held responsible for delayed or cancelled transfers.

A14 - SALZBURG. Eagle’s Nest Tour & Bavarian Alps
Driving deep into the National Park past bucolic farmhouses and picturesque villages, we arrive at the ruins of Obersalzburg. From here we transfer to special motorcoaches adapted to the scenic mountain climb to Hilter’s notorious ‘Eagle’s Nest’. Through the arches we will have splendid views up to the ‘Hohen Göll’ and across snow-capped peaks.

A16 - SALZBURG. Hohensalzburg, Mozart’s House and Lunch
First we visit the home in which Mozart was born and where he spent the early part of his life – a quaint little house in the heart of the old city. Then we take a funicular ride to the heights of Hohensalzburg for spectacular views of the city from the castle fortress battlements. A light lunch will be served in the castle with a drink included.

First we enjoy a spectacular drive leading us to a typical mountain village where we take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the magnificent alpine valley. Then we ascend to the new ski-jump, built in a bid to host the 2008 Winter Olympics. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the top before we see the spot where the Tyrolean Freedom fighters, led by Andreas Hofer, beat Napoleon’s troops into retreat.

I18 - VENICE. Lagoon Cruise with Lunch or Dinner
A half day off the beaten track! We are taken by private boat to the nearby islands in the lagoon of Venice. See the island of Murano and the Hermitage of San Francesco del Deserto. CH2 - LUCERNE. Swiss Experience
