ITINERARY

 
European Traveller
Day 1 - London - Paris (2 nights)
Greetings from our Tour Director,then off to Dover for our sea crossing to Calais in France. We drive across Somme Battlefields to Paris where we enjoy a welcome drink with our Tour Director tonight. Later, why not take an excursion to see the city illuminated?

Day 2 - Paris sightseeing & at leisure
Morning sightseeing with a local guide includes a drive along the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe and on to the Eiffel Tower, which we ascend to the second level. Next we view Notre Dame Cathedral before free time perhaps to take an excursion to the Louvre and see the famous 'Mona Lisa'! (Buffet Breakfast)

 

Day 3 - Paris - Lucerne
An early start today as we drive through the Auxerrois and Burgundy vineyards, seeing the castle of Chateauneuf. From here we continue past the remains of the Maginot line at Belfort we reach the Swiss border at Basel and on to lakeside resort of Lucerne. On our arrival an orientation tour of this medieval city shows us the Chapel Bridge and Lion Monument. This evening, after dinner, perhaps join an optional Folklore show. (Buffet breakfast / Dinner)

Day 4 - Lucerne - Florence
This morning after breakfast, maybe take a trip up a nearby mountain or shop for Swiss souvenirs. Later, we begin our drive via the Gotthard Range into Italian-speaking Ticino and cross Lake Lugano into Italy. Next we continue past Lake Como and Milan and travel across the Lombardy Plain before reaching the Apennine Hills just south of Bologna. Soon we are in Tuscany and arriving at our hotel in Renaissance Florence. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner in a local trattoria. (Buffet breakfast/ Hotel dinner)

Day 5 - Florence - Rome (2 nights)
Our morning sightseeing tour on foot in Florence with a local guide using our effcient audio system shows us the Cathedral, the Baptistry, Giotto's Bell-tower, the Signoria Square and visits the Cathedral of Santa Croce. Afterwards, there's time at lesiure to maybe explore on your own or shop for quality leather goods and gold jewelery. Later, we travel past hilltop towns on our way to the 'Eternal City, Rome'. Tonight why not dine out at a local trattoria? (Buffet breakfast)

Day 6 - Rome sightseeing & at leisure
Today our guided sightseeing tour comes to life with our special audio system and visits St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican seeing the famous 'Pieta' by Michelango. Then on to Piazza Venezia to see the tomb of the Unknown soldier and continue to the Forum and Colosseum. We'll also see the Circus Maximus - famous for its 'Ben Hur' chariot races in Roman times. Later free time to maybe visit the Sistine Chapel and the Catacombs. (Buffet breakfast)

 

Day 7 - Depart Rome
After breakfast it's 'buon viaggio' as we transfer to you to Rome Fiumicino Airport for your return flight home.

Airport Transfers
  • London Gateways: Transfers can be expensive, particularly between the Airport and central London. When you book your tour with Trafalgar your transfers to and from the airport are included. It's that simple. Trafalgar has included a Free transfer to and from your airport and Central London.
  • Important – Please Note: Passengers will only be entitled to transfers to and from London Airports providing the following conditions are met:
  • You are staying at a London hotel, booked by Trafalgar, on the night of your arrival and the night prior to the date of your departure.
  • Flights are either booked by Trafalgar or detailed information on flights is provided by your Travel Agent not less than 21 days prior to departure.
  • Only one included transfer both inbound and outbound per tour is included by Trafalgar. Transfers are by express train to a Central London Rail Station.
  • Heathrow Express operates between 05.10-23.30. Gatwick Express operates inbound services between 05.20-23.45 and outbound services from 04.30-23.45. Transfers outside of these times are at the passengers own expense.

After an unforgettable dinner in typical Parisian style, drinks included, we take a drive through the city. By night, Paris is a city transformed - no other city has such striking illuminations, such glamour or romance. Amongst the splendours we see the Place de la Concorde, Arc de Triomphe, Cathedral of Notre Dame, Champs Elysées and the Eiffel Tower.

We start with a conducted tour, enhanced by our excellent audio system, of one of the finest Art galleries in the world – the Louvre. I14 - ROME. Ancient and Christian Rome
Explore Rome’s past. Visit the Catacombs where the early Christians assembled to escape persecution and which were used as underground cemeteries. Then, on to the best preserved of the Roman Temples, the Pantheon - today used as a Christian church! On some tours a visit to the Chuch of St. Peter in Chains to see Michelangelo’s statue of Moses, will be visited instead of the Pantheon. An extension to the included sightseeing tour which allows us to admire the artistic masterpieces collected and commissioned by the Popes. I70 - ROME. Ancient and Baroque Christian sites
First we drive past the ancient baths of the Emperor Caracalla, scene of the ‘3 tenors concert’ in 1990, to the Catacombs outside the Roman Walls. Christians used these underground churches and cemeteries for assemblies and to escape persecution. Then on to visit the 5th century Church of St. Peter in Chains*, housing not only the chains which are said to have fettered St. Peter, but also one of Michelangelo’s greatest works of sculpture – Moses – a statue belonging to the mausoleum of Julius II. (* on certain departures the Church of St. Paul without the Walls will be visited instead of the Church of St. Peter in Chains) Our visit will be enhanced by the effective use of our excellent audio system.
