ITINERARY

 
The Cosmopolitan

Day 1 - London - Paris (2 nights)
A warm welcome from our Tour Director as we drive to Dover and view the White Cliffs. From here a short Channel crossing takes us to Calais in France and elegant Paris. Tonight, sample the delights Paris has to offer - cabaret, sightseeing - the choice is yours. (Continental Breakfast)

Day 2 - Paris sightseeing & at leisure
Our day begins with a guided sightseeing tour which includes views of the Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysées, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. After there is time at leisure perhaps to detour into the back streets of the Latin Quarter, take an optional excursion to Montmartre and the imposing Sacré Coeur or head for the famous highlights of the Louvre. (Continental Breakfast)
 

Day 3 - Paris - Lyon
After breakfast our drive takes us through the Forest of Fontainebleau and the wine growing region of Burgundy. From here we travel along the valley of the River Saône to its confluence with the Rhône to arrive at Lyon for dinner and overnight stay. (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)

Day 4 - Lyon - Nice (2 nights)
Today, via Montélimar, we arrive in Avignon with its Papal Palace. Then we continue through the beautiful countryside of Van Gogh and Cézanne to Nice on the French Riviera for two nights. (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)

Day 5 - Nice & Monte Carlo
Enjoy a full day to relax on the beach, or if you prefer, wander into the Old Town. Maybe sip a 'Pastis' in a stylish café on the Promenade des Anglais. This evening, we're off on an included excursion to Monte Carlo, try out your luck at one of the casinos! (Continental Breakfast)
 

Day 6 - Nice - Florence (Incisa)
Today's drive takes us across the Italian border, past Genoa, Columbus' birthplace, to Pisa with its famous Leaning Tower. Next on to Florence to enjoy a scenic view of the city from Piazzale Michelangelo. Later, there's time at leisure to see the Cathedral, Giotto's Bell Tower, Baptistry, Signoria Square and Santa Croce Basilica.

Day 7 - Florence (Incisa) - Rome (2 nights)
After breakfast this morning we enjoy some free time to shop for fine quality leather and gold before travelling through the olive groves and scenic vineyards of Tuscany, crossing central Italy as we approach the exciting city of Rome for two nights. (Continental Breakfast)

Day 8 - Rome sightseeing & at leisure
Rome has many historical treasures. Our sightseeing tour shows us the main sights from views of the Forum and Colosseum to St. Peter's in the Vatican. At leisure, perhaps visit the Catacombs. Tonight, why not enjoy dinner in a local trattoria? (Continental Breakfast)
 

Day 9 - Rome - Venice (Main.) (2 nights)
Today, we leave the 'Eternal City' as we make our way through the Apennine Mountains. From here we cross the delta of the River Po to arrive in the floating city of Venice. (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)

Day 10 - Venice orientation & at leisure
Today as we cruise along the criss-crossing canals we see vivid reminders of medieval maritime power and wealth. At leisure, why not visit St. Mark's Basilica, venture out to the islands of the lagoon or shop for Venetian glass? (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)
 

Day 11 - Venice (Main.) - Vienna (2 nights)
This morning we travel into the Carnian Alps to the Austrian border and Lake District. From here we enjoy a scenic drive to the Carinthian Lake District and the Alpine Highway. Next the Vienna Woods give way to the Danube Plains and Imperial Vienna, where we spend the next two nights. (Continental Breakfast)

Day 12 - Vienna sightseeing & at leisure
Today we enjoy a sightseeing tour of the city made famous by the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Strauss. Architectural excellence is revealed as we see some of the main highlights, including the Hofburg. Then time is your own. (Continental Breakfast)
 

Day 13 - Vienna - Innsbruck (Igls)
Today's route lies past Mondsee Lake and the Salzkammergut to Salzburg. Here an orientation reveals places associated with "The Sound of Music" and Salzburg's famous son Mozart. Next we travel
to mountain-ringed Innsbruck for dinner and overnight stay. (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)

Day 14 - Innsbruck (Igls) - Lake Lucerne (2 nights)
Our morning orientation in Innsbruck reveals the Golden Roof, Hofburg Palace, Wilten Basilica and the Olympic ski-jump. Then, we drive through the prime-skiing country of the Arlberg region arriving in Vaduz, capital of the small Principality of Liechtenstein. Later, a scenic drive through Switzerland brings us to Lucerne.

Day 15 - Lucerne orientation & at leisure
Enjoy a full day to relax in this fascinating town. First an orientation shows us the medieval Old Town, Lion Monument and Cathedral. Don't miss the chance to join an optional to ascend one of the nearby surrounding mountains. (Continental Breakfast / Dinner)
 

Day 16 - Lake Lucerne - Ludwigshafen
Today we travel to Schaffhausen to view the Rhine Falls. Then we drive into Germany, and past Lake Titisee to the heart of the Black Forest. Sample the local Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte before heading to the University town of Heidelberg. Here we view its famous castle before arriving at our hotel in Ludwigshafen.

Day 17 - Ludwigshafen - Amsterdam (2 nights)
We enjoy a scenic Rhine cruise today beginning at St. Goar, sheltering beneath the Lorelei. We glide past castles and vineyards to Boppard. Then on to Cologne where we admire its Cathedral, before heading to Holland and Arnhem, scene of 'Operation Market Garden'. Finally, we arrive at the friendly city of Amsterdam.

Day 18 - Amsterdam orientation, Volendam excursion & at leisure
Our morning orientation tour starts with a fascinating coach ride past the Tower of Tears, the Royal Palace, Dam Square and more. Then enjoy a visit to a diamond-polishing factory before we drive out of the city, through the Dutch countryside to the fishing village of Volendam. On our arrival we admire the harbour with free time to shop for souvenirs. We also stop to visit a cheese farm and a clog-making workshop. We return to Amsterdam with time at leisure. Day 19 - Amsterdam - London
Today's journey takes us through Dutch and Belgian countryside to Calais port. Here we board our ferry for the short sea crossing to Dover and our return to London by coach. (Continental Breakfast)

This evening begins with a visit to the Fischer Family Distillery. A short drive then takes us to the edge of the Vienna Woods for dinner in one of the traditional ‘Heurigen’ or wine taverns. When we finally reach the ‘Grand Corniche’ - the highway which follows the ancient Aurelian Way - we stop at the picturesque village of ‘La Turbie’. There the Emperor Augustus erected a Roman ‘Trophy’ - a dazzling white sacrificial temple to mark the border between Rome and Gaul (modern-day France), and from this spot we admire a sweeping panorama over the Mediterranean and the Principality of Monaco. Among its many treasures, the Rijksmuseum holds one of the most important collections in the world of 17th century Flemish and Dutch paintings. A highlight is ‘The Nightwatch’ by Holland’s most well-known artist, Rembrandt. More recent history is explored on our visit to the canal-side house, where Anne Frank and her family were sequestered before being betrayed to the German authorities.

H16 - AMSTERDAM. Jewish Amsterdam
Wealth and spirit is what the Jews have brought to Amsterdam. Both can still be admired in the former Jewish part of the city. A visit of the Anne Frank House and the Hollandse Schouwburg tells the story of the Nazi attempt to exterminate the Jews in Europe. But the Portuguese synagogue will convince the visitor of the continuation of the Jewish traditions today.

I14 - ROME. Ancient and Christian Rome
Explore Rome’s past. Visit the Catacombs where the early Christians assembled to escape persecution and which were used as underground cemeteries. Our guided tour begins with the Academy of Fine Arts with its Michelangelo collection including the world famous statue of David. Cameras at the ready for the many magnificent sights awaiting us as we ‘do as the Romans do’ and start the evening with a ‘passegiata’ (evening stroll) along the Via Condotti to the world-famous Spanish Steps in Rome’s most fashionable shopping area. The ‘Campidoglio’, Piazza Venezia and so much more are included on this evening visit before we linger in Piazza Navona with its many pavement cafés and trattorias to admire the seventeenth century fountains and architecture. NB On certain departures, the Spanish Steps will be substituted by the Piazza Rotonda, dominated by the mighty Pantheon.
