The
Semonggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre provides a rare opportunity to be at
close encounter with the semi-wild orang utans, who have been
rescued from captivity and trained to survive in the surrounding
forest reserve. The rehabilitated animals roam freely in the
rain forest and often return to the centre at feeding time. Anah
Rais is a large Bidayuh (Land Dayak) village. The focal point of
the village is a large and well-preserved traditional bamboo
longhouse which is home to dozens of families. This guided tour
introduces visitors to the unique architectural and cultural
features of the longhouse and the traditional farming lifestyle
of the Bidayuh people. |

This
small peninsula, one and half hours from Kuching by car and
longboat, is home to seven distinct rainforest ecosystems,
giving it a remarkable diversity of animal and plant life.
Bako's most famous residents are the bizarre Proboscis monkeys
and it is also home to silver langurs (leaf monkeys),
long-tailed macaque monkeys, wild boar, flying squirrels and
monitor lizards as well as hundreds of different bird species.
Fascinating plant life includes mangroves, strangling figs,
carnivorous pitcher plants and symbiotic ant plants. Unique
geological features mark the coastline, whilst well-marked
trails led to rugged jungle-covered hilltops and secluded
beaches. |

Wildlife Cruise |

The
exciting cruise will take you around the rivers of the Santubong
Peninsular, offering you the chance of seeing some of Sarawak's
fascinating wildlife. The cruise criss-crosses the mouth of the
Santubong River where the rare Irrawaddy dolphins are often seen
swimming and diving in the estuary. Your boat then cruises along
the mangrove banks in search of the rare Proboscis monkeys,
often seen in the treetops at the waters edge settling down for
the night. As dusk arrives, we watch the fireflies moving
amongst the branches of the mangrove and we might see crocodiles
which can be spotted by their brightly shinning eyes when shone
upon by torchlights. (Note: Wildlife sightings cannot be
guaranteed, however our local tour operator does enjoy a high
success rate. The cruises do not operate during rainy weather
and will change to another day.) |

Day
1
The 225km journey by either car/coach takes you through lush
green countryside dotted with padi fields, pepper gardens,
rubber plantations and flanked by jungle-clad mountains. We will
make a stop at the Semmonggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre,
which provides a rare opportunity to be at close encounter with
the semi-wild orang utans, who have been rescued from captivity
and trained to survive in the surrounding forest reserve. The
rehabilitated animals roam freely in the rain forest and often
return to the centre at feeding times. Continuing our journey,
enroute we make a stop at the Serian farmer's market, visit
pepper garden and view carnivorous pitcher plants. Take our
lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban country. Arrive at
Lemanak jetty mid-afternoon for a longboat ride up the Lemanak
River, passing through typical Borneo countryside with an
ancient longhouse tucked behind almost every bend of the river.
Arrive at either Serubah or Nanga Kesit Longhouse and visit the
'entire village under on roof'. Dinner, featuring delicious
fresh jungle produce and is served in a simple guest-house.
After dinner, return to the longhouse for an evening's
entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and a
glass of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are
fun-loving people and visitors are expected to join in.
Overnight stay in the guest house. (Lunch, Dinner)
Day 2
After breakfast, enjoy a blowpipe demonstration and try
shooting one yourself. Then take a short walk through the forest
accompanied by traditionally-clad Iban trackers and learn about
the traditional uses of rainforest plants in Iban culture.
Return back to Kuching via the same route and lunch is served
